“Fasten your seat belts and hold on tight, it’s going to get bumpy.”
This is the first posting in a four-part series. You will be filled with an ambiguous plethora of emotional and psychological ups and downs as you transition – sorry no way around this one. There will be times of extreme joy, happiness, satisfaction, and accomplishment. Unfortunately, you will more than likely also experience the polar opposites to these emotions. This is completely normal and is part of the de-institutionalization process – yes, you have been institutionalized to the ways of the military…and if you are reading this denying what was just said, it is because you are institutionalized and my point has been made. The first thing is to accept that this is a normal phase and rely upon your military training on how to deal with stressful situations (i.e. remain calm and collected, and start developing a plan).
